Instagram API Changes – FAQs

The Instagram API has Changed: Here’s What It Means for You

To receive any content we need administrators of Instagram Business accounts to explicitly approve us to call the API on their behalf.  Without this explicit authorisation (Instagram Business tokens) we are unable to return any data.

What is the Instagram API and what changed?

Confused about what exactly the Instagram API is? The Instagram API (short for “application program interface”) is essentially a way for apps to talk to and interact with Instagram. For example, at Isentia, our technology including Mediaportal and 1-Social, uses the Instagram API to access the Instagram content you are tracking.

On December 11, 2018, Instagram ended their old Platform API and replaced it with a new Graph API.

The change affects all third parties who interact with and use Instagram data, including Isentia.

The change was a continuation of the changes Instagram made to their API in April 2018 (rate limiting and restricting personally identifiable data) and is part of Facebook and Instagram’s continuing effort to address personal data privacy/security and improper use of their users’ data.

What has changed?

  • Access to Instagram content has been restricted to Instagram Business Profiles and will require verification (ie to receive Instagram content the profile owner must log in with the password and grant permission to allow access).
  • Keyword matching  and the ability to track handles (aside from your Instagram Business Account) is no longer available.
  • A #hashtag search is available but limited to 30 #hashtags per rolling 7 day period; personally identifiable information (including usernames) have been removed from the data returned by Instagram.
  • Clients can return content which directly references/tags their own Business Account handle.
  • All remaining capabilities to gather data from public Instagram accounts has ceased.
  • All current and future apps accessing the new Graph API will need to go through an app review and approval process.
  • Time stamps are no longer available (within our platforms we will use the time at which the item was harvested by our system for this mandatory field)
  • All personally identifying information (including username, location) is not accessible

There may be other restrictions or changes to Instagram data and these will be communicated as they become known.

What are we doing?

We submitted our application and were approved to use the new Graph API by Instagram.

Our goal is to minimise any disruption to your services, and as such we have implemented the required changes within our systems in accordance with Instagram’s terms.

Outlined below is the expected experience in our respective Mediaportal and 1-Social platforms :

  • Users need to go to our settings areas in both Mediaportal and 1-Social and click on the connect options. This step only needs to happen once, as unlike our recent Facebook changes this does not require re authentication. We do allow users to withdraw our access to their Instagram Business account at any time, in the same settings page. To complete this step the user must have:
    •  The correct logins for a Facebook account which is connected to a Instagram Business Account
    • Accept Instagram’s terms as outlined (this will be a hyperlink in a verification pop-up, so they understand these clearly).

Broadcast Package FAQs
Broadcast Packages make it easy to stream or instantly download all the video and audio content you need without worrying about incurring additional charges. Have a question about how Broadcast Packages work?

Do I need to contact my Account Management team to Download or stream a clip?

No. Broadcast content can be streamed or downloaded instantly from Mediaportal on your desktop, or from the mobile web browser.

Can I sign up for one month?

No, Broadcast Packages a can only be added for the rest of your current contract or added to a new agreement.

How does Isentia calculate which package I should be on?

We use your last 12 month’s volume of broadcast mentions and set your package based on your actual usage.

Does this include edited clips and Transcripts?

No. Edited clips and transcripts require human intervention, so there are additional costs for these services.

Can I distribute the media items to colleagues internally?

Yes.  Copyright allows you to use the media item within your organisation.  Any external use would need permission from the original broadcaster. We have added shareable links to Mediaportal to make it easier for you to share video and audio with you colleagues.

How will this appear on my invoice?

It will be a separate line item showing the package and total for the month.

Can I bypass the ordering screen in Mediaportal?

For streaming and instant download content yes. Transcripts and Edited clips will incur additional charges.

Can I now order these items via my app?

In the coming weeks we will be changing this process to remove the ordering screen.  We will contact you once it can be changed.
